What Is a Sleep Calculator?

A sleep calculator determines the best times to fall asleep or wake up based on 90-minute sleep cycles. Each complete sleep cycle consists of four stages: light sleep, deeper sleep, deepest sleep, and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep.

Waking up at the end of a sleep cycle — rather than in the middle — helps you feel more alert and less groggy. This is why sleeping 7.5 hours can sometimes feel better than sleeping 8 hours.
